PU Based Coatings

PU or polyurethane is an extremely crucial form of waterproofing solution designed from specially developed polymers with properly selected and graded fillers. Chemsol’s PU based coatings provide a premium and highly durable waterproofing solution by reaction with the atmospheric moisture.

Chemolastic PU

Chemsol Chemolastic PU is a single component PU modified bitumen based elastomeric waterproofing system. Chemolastic PU is easy to apply with roller, brush.

Applications

  • New roofs
  • Podium waterproofing
  • Retaining walls, Wet areas, bridges
  • Being UV resistant product can also be used for the exposed surfaces.
  • Refurbishing old membrane system including torch-on membrane.

Features

  • Single component UV resistant with long term ageing stability.
  • Cured membrane remain stable even at extreme temperatures (-25oC to 120oC)
  • Resistant to chlorides and sulphates commonly present in soil.
  • Easy to apply with brush, roller or squeegee.
  • Highly elastic up to 900% elongation.
  • Better adhesion to substrate, hence can be used for wide range of applications.

Method of Application

1. Surface Preparation

  • Surface should be clean and dry and in sound condition.
  • All the surface dirt, grease, loose particles should be removed from the surface. And the surface should be washed thoroughly with clean water.
  • All other previous coatings if any shall be completely removed.

2. New Surfaces

  • The newly constructed surfaces shall be completely cured before coating application.

3. Cracks and Joint Treatment

  • All the surface cracks FROM 0 - 5mm shall be opened with a 3mm angle grinder.
  • The opened cracks shall be cleaned properly and filled with a suitable acrylic crack-filler or PU Sealant.
  • Cracks more than 5mm should be repaired using polymer modified mortar using Chemfast SBR. With a cement sand ratio of 1:3 and polymer content of 10% by weight if cement. Allow it to cure as required.

4. Pre-Application Testing

  • Ponding test to be done to identify porous surfaces.
  • The porous surfaces should be then grouted to remove any porosity in the substrate before coating application.
  • Post ponding to be done to be certain that the surface porosity is completely removed and the surface is ready for coating application.

5. Priming

  • Apply priming coat with Chemsol Chemolastic PU 200% water dilution i.e. (40L water in 20L of Chemolastic PU). The priming coat shall give approximate coverage of 8-10 Sqm/L depending upon the surface finish.

6. Application

  • Mix the bucket contents thoroughly.
  • The drain outlets need to be properly detailed with the coating with an additional piece of fiberglass mesh as a reinforcement.
  • Apply 1st coat of Chemsol Chemolastic PU with 20% dilution on the surface with a coverage of 0.33 L/Sqm/Coat all over the surface. Let the coating air dry for minimum 6hrs.
  • Apply 2nd coat of Chemsol Chemolastic PU at an angle of 90o to the first coat with 20% dilution with a coverage of 0.33 L/Sqm/Coat and let dry for minimum 6 hrs.
  • For higher performance Glass Fiber reinforcement can be applied between 2 coats of Chemolastic PU.

7. Ponding

  • Let the system air cure for 7-8 days before pond test.
  • Ponding shall be done with water not more than 5 cm in height.

Precautions and Limitations

  • Do not dilute Chemolastic PU with water for coating application beyond recommended dosage.
  • Keep material closed when not in use.
  • Corners, joints and repair areas should be treated with two extra coats.
  • Not recommended for water retaining structures like water tank, swimming pool.
  • Excessive film thickness may result in microbubbles. This does not affect the film integrity. Excessive film thickness shall be avoided during coating application.
  • Concrete shall be carefully accessed for the phenomenon of outgassing. Hence it is always recommended that the coating shall be applied late afternoon and evening.
  • Product being sticky it will attract dust when open to sky. To avoid the same, one coat of acrylic coating is recommended to be applied on the Chemolastic coating.
